Warangal was the capital of a Shaivaite kingdom that was managed by the Kakatiya administration from twelfth to the fourteenth hundreds of years. Its old name was Orugallu where Oru implies one and Kallu means stone. The whole city was supposedly cut in a solitary rock, henceforth the name Orukallu that implies one rock.
