Early start was worth it, had the top viewpoint mostly to myself for the first half hour. Several small entrance donations (15-25k IDR) at each viewpoint along the road add up but each is a genuinely different angle. Muddy after rain, real shoes recommended over sandals.

80,000 IDR (~$5), paths clean and well maintained. Beautiful temple ruins under the canopy, but keep anything loose zipped away — a macaque unzipped an outer pocket of my daypack in seconds and made off with a granola bar.

Roughly 1,500,000 IDR (~$98) a night for a room overlooking the gardens, breakfast included. The grounds have five separate pools scattered through landscaped tropical gardens, and it made a genuinely relaxing base for six days. One night an AC unit rattled loudly enough that we called the front desk, and they moved us to a different room within twenty minutes — a real inconvenience but handled well. Wifi was reliable throughout.

Free to walk through, and came back at night for the Legong dance (~100,000 IDR / $6.50) which is genuinely the version worth prioritizing. Grounds clean and shaded, a relaxed half-day paired with the temple next door.

~50,000 IDR (~$3.20) including sarong rental. Joined the purification bathing queue, genuinely moving to see real religious practice alongside the tourists. Pools cleaned regularly but crowded by midday, earlier is better.

Free to walk, no entrance fee at all — the real find of the whole trip. About an hour and a half past Ubud so most tour groups skip it entirely, meaning the rice terraces here (arguably more dramatic than Tegallalang, with Mount Agung as a backdrop) had almost nobody on them. A couple of family-run warungs along the road did a full lunch for under 40,000 IDR (~$2.60), clean and genuinely home-cooked.

Entry is 20,000 IDR (~$1.30), and honestly this one has been discovered — nowhere near as quiet as Sidemen earlier today, and there is a zipline operator right next to the falls that adds some noise. Still a genuinely powerful waterfall and worth the stop, just do not expect it to feel hidden. Concrete steps down are well maintained; the swimming area gets crowded by midday, go before 10am if you actually want to get in the water.

Guided tours 350,000-450,000 IDR (~$23-30) with a basic breakfast at the summit. Brutal two-hour climb in the dark, genuinely cold up top — bring a real jacket, not just a hoodie. The sunrise over the caldera with Lake Batur below is worth every miserable step in the dark. Toilets at the rest point are basic squat-style.

Small donation entry, peaceful once the trekking crowds clear out — a good spot for tea and to warm back up after the cold summit. 20-minute stop was enough.

About 1,370,000 IDR (~$90) a night at Bali's oldest international hotel, built in 1966, and it shows in places — some fixtures feel dated. But the beachfront gardens are genuinely beautiful and the pools are huge. We switched base here from Ubud after the Mount Batur trek specifically to cut the drive time to Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, and the Nusa Penida boat the next morning. Staff were warm, breakfast was generous. If pristine modern finishes matter more to you than history and location, this isn't it — but for the convenience, we'd stay again.

Came in the morning specifically to skip the famous sunset crowds — you lose the silhouette shot but the sea temple was almost empty and you can actually hear the waves. Honest complaint: the souvenir strip leading up to it is littered and the vendors are genuinely pushy, more than anywhere else on this whole trip. The temple itself, once you're past that, is worth it. Entry ~60,000 IDR (~$4).

Priced by weight, roughly 250,000 IDR (~$16) per kg — ask before they grill it, a couple of tables around us got different quotes than we did. Touristy for sure, but the seafood was genuinely fresh and eating with feet in the sand after the temple was the right way to end the day.

Early ferry from Sanur (~200,000 IDR / $13 round trip) meant the T-Rex-shaped viewpoint was nearly empty before the day-trippers arrived — do this early or not at all, by 10am it's a scrum for photo spots. Descent to the beach is steep and genuinely tough, good shoes essential. No real toilets or bins at the top.
